European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
